Matthew Gray Gubler Talks In The Blood, And Balancing Acting And Directing

123

In a new article from Zap2it, Matthew Gray Gubler talks about filming tonight’s episode of Criminal Minds “In The Blood”, as well as balancing filming with his directing duties, and how the last 9 years have “swept by”. Enjoy!!!

Matthew Gray Gubler knows“Criminal Minds” typically is spooky enough on a weekly basis as is.

The night before Halloween, though, the long-running CBS crime drama can be counted upon to be seasonally eerie. “In the Blood,” Wednesday’s (Oct. 30) new episode, takes Dr. Spencer Reid (Gubler) and his Behavioral Analysis Unit colleagues to Utah, where several murders appear to be patterned on the Salem Witch Trials — encompassing victims being burned at the stake.

“I love it,” the friendly Gubler tellsZap2it about the story. “One of our favorite directors, Michael Lange, directed it. It’s a fun, visually interesting episode. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m pretty sure we do amp it up. It’s about an interesting point in the history of America, too.”

Costumes are involved for the main cast members as well, since the tale also involves tech expert Garcia (Kirsten Vangness) staging a Day of the Dead celebration for her co-workers — surely an appropriate sort of party in the context of “Criminal Minds.”

While working on this week’s tale, Gubler also was doing lots of homework for the next one. He doubles as director of the Nov. 6 episode … the sixth time he’s performed that dual duty on the show, with a seventh in store for him before the series’ current Season 9 ends.

“The episodes before and after (a directing assignment) are always very heavy on me,” Gubler reflects. “I’m either prepping mine or editing mine, so I’m just kind of living in my trailer and sleeping very little. The episodes around that one are always challenging, but fun.”

Gubler marvels that “Criminal Minds” — which also is repeated regularly on both A&E and ION Television — continues to put forth original, if perpetually bizarre, stories. It also continues to develop its regular characters, as with Reid’s ongoing struggle to cope with the tragic loss of his girlfriend last season.

“I can’t believe it,” Gubler maintains. “it’s gone so fast. In the blink of an eye, nine years has sort of swept by. It still feels like we’re shooting the pilot. It feels fresh and wonderful, and I love the cast and crew. That makes it a great thing for it to still be a part of my life.”

Matthew Gray Gubler Linked To New Film In 2014

The University Of Arkansas released a story on one of their recent graduates detailing his upcoming projects, one of which features Matthew Gray Gubler. Matthew is slated to star in Writer/Director David Campbell’s new full length feature, based on his first short film “Antiquities”. Here is the full article.

Arkansans hoping to catch an award-winning, up-and-coming film director need not travel to Hollywood.

Instead, they only need to look toward the career of Daniel Campbell, a Benton native and marketing graduate of UALR.Campbell2

Campbell is the award-winning writer and director of three short films, each of which has screened at Oscar qualifying film festivals across the U.S.

In fact, he is the only person in Little Rock Film Festival history to win the Charles B. Pierce award three times, most recently for “The Discontentment of Ed Telfair,” which was named the 2013 winner of the “Made in Arkansas Best Short.”

His recent acceptance to the prestigious Rhode Island International Film Festival will add to Campbell’s impressive and growing resume. The Academy Award-qualifying festival accepted only three percent of films submitted this year.

Even Arkansas Film Commissioner Christopher Crane recently touted Campbell’s skill to the Arkansas Economic Development Commission.

“We have true content developers in the state of Arkansas,” Crane told the AEDC.

“[Campbell] is a great example of someone who is an Arkansan who has worked the craft, been able to work in films we’ve recruited here to get experience and to validate himself as a filmmaker.”

Campbell recently worked on the made-in-Arkansas film, “Mud,” starring Matthew McConaghey, as well as other recent shoots in the state. James Franco performs the lead character in the next production in which Campbell will work.

Campbell will also shoot his first feature film next year, a comedy based on his first short film, “Antiquities.” Matthew Gray Gubler is set to play the lead character, but Campbell is still casting the other roles.

The storyline involves a young man who moves to his father’s hometown after his father’s unexpected death. He makes the move thinking he will learn more about who his father was but ends up learning more about himself than he thought possible.

Campbell advises future filmmakers to “Watch and study the films that you like and figure out why you like them. This enables you to tap into your interests and figure out which types of films you want to make.”

Campbell also recommended working on as many film sets as possible.

“Productions are always looking for good interns, so go on set and learn as much as you can from each department,” he said.

“Most importantly, go shoot your own films. They don’t have to be perfect, but learn from the mistakes you make. The only way to grow as a filmmaker is to make films and learn from the mistakes that you — as well as every other filmmaker — will make along the way.”
